The economy of The City of Gold begins with the character of the land, but the wealth beneath that land cannot shape a kingdom by itself. Mining is only the first step.


Iron Ore cannot become a weapon or suit of armor on its own. Copper and Tin cannot assemble themselves into machinery or fittings. Silver and Gold do not emerge from the earth as coinage, regalia, or treasure. Before any of these resources can power civilization, they must pass through specialized craftsmen capable of turning raw potential into refined industrial materials.


This is the industrial backbone of the kingdom: Metals & Refining.


At its heart stands another resource whose value is measured not by what it becomes, but by everything it makes possible. Coal is the foundation of the entire industry. Without fuel, no furnace burns. Without furnaces, no kingdom can industrialize.


Smelting & Refining


Two professions are responsible for every material in this first industrial layer: the Smelter and the Refiner.


Their work follows extraction and precedes advanced craftsmanship. Mine Overseers organize access to ore and Coal. Industrial processors then apply heat, knowledge, and labor to create the dependable materials upon which future metalworking professions will rely.


The Smelter


The Smelter works at a processing station also called the Smelter. Every operation consumes Coal.


Iron Ore becomes Iron Ingots. Copper Ore becomes Copper Ingots. Tin Ore becomes Tin Ingots. Silver Ore becomes Silver Ingots. Gold Ore becomes Gold Ingots.


These pure metal ingots are not final products. They are the stable industrial foundation from which nearly every future advanced metalworking profession can begin. The value of the Smelter lies in making ore usable: transforming an uneven raw resource into a material that other skilled craftspeople can trust.


A County may possess rich mineral deposits, but those deposits remain potential until fuel reaches the furnace and a capable Smelter performs the work.


The Refiner


The Refiner operates the Refinery, which also consumes Coal. Where the Smelter creates pure metal ingots, the Refiner produces materials that cannot be made through simple smelting.


In industrial refining, Rock Salt becomes Refined Salt and Sulfur Ore becomes Refined Sulfur.


In alloy production, Copper Ingots and Tin Ingots become Bronze Ingots, while Iron Ingots and Coal become Steel Ingots.


This gives the Refiner two connected responsibilities. Refined industrial products prepare Salt and Sulfur for future uses. Advanced alloys combine existing materials into something with a new economic purpose. Both require a processor whose contribution extends beyond merely heating raw ore.



The complete chain matters more than any one transformation. Extraction supplies the resources. Coal supplies the heat. Smelters and Refiners supply the skill. Remove any link and industrial production stops.


Fueling civilization



Coal is therefore one of the kingdom's most strategically valuable resources.


It powers both Smelters and Refineries. Every pure ingot depends upon it. Every alloy depends upon it. Refined Salt and Refined Sulfur depend upon the same industrial foundation. A County rich in Coal may become just as valuable as one rich in precious metals because nearly every industrial process needs its fuel.


This creates a different kind of regional power. A Gold deposit may promise prestige and wealth, but Gold Ore still needs a furnace. Iron may support armies, tools, and engineering, but Iron Ore cannot reach those professions without industrial heat. Copper and Tin may lie in different Counties, and Bronze requires both of them to meet where Coal and refining expertise are available.


Industrial strength therefore comes from combination. Raw resources provide potential. Fuel makes transformation possible. Skilled craftsmen give the process direction and value. Trade and political relationships will eventually connect the Counties possessing each part of that chain.


From industry to civilization


The products of Metals & Refining flow toward nearly every part of medieval life.


Iron and Steel support weapons, armor, tools, nails, chains, engineering, and machinery. They give future smiths and builders the materials required for both everyday work and military power.


Copper, Tin, and Bronze support household tools, utensils, mechanical components, decorative objects, bells, and ship fittings. Their value reaches from practical craftsmanship into transport, ceremony, and the detailed objects that make Settlements feel inhabited.


Silver and Gold support coinage, jewelry, royal regalia, luxury goods, and noble wealth. Their refinement connects mineral scarcity to prestige, political display, and the treasures through which Houses and kingdoms may express their legacy.


Refined Salt and Refined Sulfur are valuable industrial materials whose importance will become clearer as future gameplay systems are defined. Their later uses remain deliberately unexplored here; what matters now is that both require fuel, a Refinery, and skilled industrial work before they can enter those future chains.



The furnace is far removed from the finished symbol of prosperity, yet the connection is direct. Refined materials equip travelers, move through markets, strengthen armies, enrich noble Houses, and endure in the works by which kingdoms are remembered.


Another essential layer


Metals are not the final products of the economy. They are another essential layer in a much larger production chain.


Every sword, suit of armor, ship fitting, coin, and royal treasure first began as raw ore deep beneath the earth. Before any could serve a soldier, sailor, merchant, ruler, or craftsperson, that ore passed through fire, fuel, and the hands of skilled industrial craftsmen.
