Economy: Wheelwright

Every thriving economy depends upon movement. The Wheelwright crafts the carts and wagons that connect settlements, businesses and trade across the kingdom.

Every thriving economy depends upon movement. The Wheelwright crafts the carts and wagons that connect settlements, businesses and trade across the kingdom.

Resources become valuable only when they can reach the people who need them.

A forest may supply timber. A quarry may prepare stone. Farms, mines and Workshops may fill their stores with the products of skilled labor. Yet without movement, those goods remain trapped where they were produced.

The Wheelwright creates the vehicles that make overland transport possible.

Unlike future transportation infrastructure, the Wheelwright manufactures the vehicles themselves. The profession gives the economy its wheels; the operation of transport services remains a separate responsibility.

The Wheelwright

The Wheelwright works at the Wheelwright's Workshop, where structural timber, durable leather and refined metal become practical transport vehicles.

The Workshop uses:

  • Wooden Beams
  • Wooden Boards
  • Leather
  • Iron, Bronze or Steel

From those materials, the Wheelwright produces exactly three current vehicles:

  • Handcart
  • Cart
  • Wagon

The Wheelwright focuses entirely on building transport vehicles. Wheelwrights do not carry cargo, operate journeys or move Players. Their craft ends when a sound, dependable vehicle is ready for use.

The production chain shown here connects Carpentry, Leather & Textiles and Metals & Refining in a single advanced craft. The operation of transport services will be covered separately.

Vehicles

The Wheelwright's initial catalogue serves three clear scales of overland movement.

Handcart

A Handcart supports small personal transport. It is the simplest vehicle in the collection, suited to the ordinary movement of manageable goods.

Cart

A Cart provides general-purpose transport for everyday trade. It represents the dependable middle ground used wherever regular commerce requires more than one person can comfortably carry.

Wagon

A Wagon is a large transport vehicle intended for substantial cargo. It gives major producers, builders and merchants a vehicle suited to the greater demands of a growing economy.

These roles establish clear, meaningful differences while keeping the profession focused upon its foundational identity.

Commerce in Motion

The Wheelwright allows civilization to move.

Merchants transport goods between communities. Builders transport the materials needed for construction. Settlements exchange resources that one region possesses and another requires.

Every production chain introduced so far ultimately depends upon that movement. Timber must leave the forest. Stone must leave the quarry. Food must reach markets and Inns. Clothing, tools, furniture and Building Materials must reach the people and projects waiting for them.

The Wheelwright therefore supports the entire economy without operating transportation itself. The infrastructure that organizes journeys, workers and services will be introduced in a future article.

Every prosperous kingdom depends upon movement.

Without vehicles, resources remain trapped where they were produced. Commerce slows, construction waits and distant Settlements struggle to exchange what they have for what they need.

The Wheelwright ensures that commerce, construction and civilization continue moving forward.

The next Economy article will continue expanding the kingdom's infrastructure—without revealing its subject.
